Unchecky Prevents Software Installers from Installing Third Party Bundled Offers

Raj J Salecha shared this with you.

Free software developers cannot make money by selling their products directly, but there is always an opportunity to earn revenue by teaming up with another party. For a fee, the developer will include a third party software in the installer of their free software so that the included third party software automatically installs on the system when the free software is installed. A common example of unwanted third party software are toolbars and trial software.

The practice is no longer limited to petty developers, as even legitimate software companies and previously reputed organizations like Download.com and Sourceforge have started indulging in it.

ask-toolbar

Experienced users can avoid falling into the trap by opting for custom installation, if it's provided, and carefully reading the text on each screen during the installation of the software. At some point, usually near the very beginning and just next to the license agreement screen, the installer will offer an option to decline the bundled offer.

Inexperienced users, on the other hand, will swiftly go through these options in an effort to hurry and end up installing software they don't need, or unwittingly changing their browser's default search provider and homepage.

A new free software called Unchecky claims to protect users from unwanted third party software installation by automatically unchecking unrelated offers such as potentially unwanted programs, offers to change your homepage or your search engine. Unchecky achieves this by forcing the installer to switch to custom installation mode, if available, and automatically opting out of bundled offers. Additionally, Unchecky warns the user when they accept a potentially unwanted offer.

unchecky

Unchecky's author warns that the software might not support all installers especially those which are not released yet. The program runs as a service and can be enabled or disabled by running the installed executable. It's worth noting that Unchecky updates automatically, so you don't have to worry about running the latest version.

The Big Fat List of Documentaries

Raj J Salecha shared this with you.

Thousands of documentaries have been produced till date. A simple search for "documentaries" on Google brings hundreds of great results, among which are websites dedicated to documentaries such as Topdocumentary Films, Documentary Storm, Free Documentaries and Documentary Heaven that allow you to search and watch documentaries for free. Even more documentaries are available for viewing on YouTube, Netflix and elsewhere. But how do you find them?

DocuWiki is Internet's biggest resource for documentary lovers. The website serves as an index of documentary films and series on the Edonkey Network, originating from many broadcasters including the BBC, PBS a nd more. The website lists nearly every documentary that has been produced, and sorted by subject, publisher, year of release, narrator, language etc. Each documentary is accompanied by a brief description of its content, posters and screenshots from the video. Because DocuWiki also provides links to download these documentaries via the file sharing network, some may view the website as endorsing piracy. Regardless, it's still the best and the most resourceful encyclopedia of documentaries on the Internet today. The dedication and research that went into building the collection is unparalleled.

docuwiki-1

DocuWiki consist information about more than 6,000 documentaries. They are classified into 11 categories - Arts, Biography, Culture, Health-Medical, History, Nature, Science, Sociopolitical, Technology, Travel and War – each further classified into numerous sub-categories.

You can also browse for documentaries by name of the publisher, and the title of the show. For instance, BBC and PBS produces excellent documentaries under shows such as BBC Horizon and PBS Nova that are worth watching. If you have your favorite narrator, for instance, David Attenborough, you can find all documentaries that are narrated by him.

docuwiki-2

Once you have discovered a new documentary that you want to watch, search for the title of the documentary on any search engine and you will almost always find these shows streaming online on YouTube or on the publisher's website.

Don't know where to begin? Here is a list of some the best documentaries you can't afford to miss.

Just How Green Is Earth, Really?

Raj J Salecha shared this with you.

In the most literal sense of the word.

Click to launch the gallery.

These images were taken by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, a satellite run jointly, as the name suggests, by NASA and the NOAA. In these shots, the satellite is using a Visible-Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite, or VIIRS, to see the difference between vegetation-rich and arid land. It bounces beams off Earth and detects changes in its reflection, allowing it to see vegetation, since vegetation reflects infrared and near-infrared light in a different way than other materials. But it's even more useful than that; VIIRS is used to monitor not just the existence of vegetation, but how it changes and expands and contracts over time.

Check out the gallery above to see just how green va rious parts of the globe are.

How To Get Rich In Your Country Of Choice [Infographic]

Raj J Salecha shared this with you.

It's easy! Just inherit gobs of cash.

How do the rich get rich? The answer depends on geography.

This infographic, designed by studio BoldFace and published by Independent Newspapers, breaks down, for various regions, how the rich earned their dough. In the United States, it's a landslide: 67 percent of wealthy survey respondents said they made it big by "savings through earnings." In the Middle East, meanwhile, "inheritance" is just barely the most popular way of striking it rich, with 49 percent of respondents saying they got their dough passed on to them. Since the graphic was published in Irish newspapers, there's also of ton of data on how Ireland's rich accumulated their wealth.

The infographic still leaves a couple que stions open. How is "wealthy" being defined here? And what can we attribute to the differences: culture, laws, or something else? Either way, go ahead and use this as your field guide to your very own cash-filled swimming pool.

The Private Yacht of Kitchen Sinks Has Room For Weeks of Dirty Dishes

If you can't help but stare in awe whenever you get the chance to peek inside a professional kitchen at a restaurant, you'll be ecstatic to hear that KWC's Waterstation is actually designed for home use. Albeit a home with a very big kitchen and enough disposable income to afford a $15,000 sink, but it's nice to know such luxury exists for when you make it big.

Robotic Kite Power Could Turn The Sky Into A Wind Farm

Raj J Salecha shared this with you.

Google's acquisition of a kite power generator manufacturer suggests a strong future for the technology.

Google has acquired a Bay Area technology company that generates power through wind turbines attached to robotic kites. The news comes just a couple weeks after the company, Makani Power, completed the first fully autonomous flight of a kite power system.

How flying generators work: the kite flies in a circle, off nothing more than lift and wind, and uses that motion to push air over its propellers, which in turn generate electricity. The energy is then transmitted down a tether attached to a landing station, dubbed the "spar buoy< /a>." Makani claims that the system generates more energy than conventional turbines and costs less to build.

Why is Google interested? Google uses a tremendous amount of electricity, and has copped to being a little embarrased by how much fossil fuel it uses. Google actively seeks out renewable energy, and has invested in wind farms before. Efficient, futuristic renewable energy harvested by flying robots? Ideal.
